Hairspray

Poster

Clarendon poster framed, with cacti

For this poster, I was tasked with recreating an iconic design from the 20th century and back. I had recently seen Hairspray on Broadway in Chicago, and as a fan, I always thought Tracy Turnblad's face matched perfectly with Paula Scher's Public Theater poster for The Diva is Dismissed. I knew immediately what I wanted to do, and recreated Scher's piece for Hairspray.

I started with the illustration of Tracy's face. To get a complete face, I needed to layer the different images of her I could find online - the top of her head, one half of her face, the other half. I collaged them, and began drawing out the different parts of her face until she was complete to my standards. I made sure to work in a single color, using different shades to add depth and shine.

Once the illustration was complete, I formatted the poster to match Scher's piece, with warped text and similar rotations. I finished with this poster.
